Yo Ilonka Garcia de parte del Club Social Cultural Y Recreativo Dominicano les quiere dar las gracias a usted y a su familia por haber hecho realidad otra celebracion del dia de Independencia Dominicana en Los Angeles. Nuestra devocion patriotica una vez fue manifestada con una gran concurrencia. Bailamos, comimos y disfrutamos de la hermosa musica amenizada por el Conjunto Tipico de Radhame & Fosforito que por ende; nos hicieron regocijar y gozar de su gran interpretacion. Tocaron tan, pero tan bien que por peticion popular ya nos las estamos ingeniando para volverlos a traer. Al mismo tiempo estuvo tambien el DJ Pedro El Sabroso quien nos dio tremenda compilacion de merengues y salsa demostrando una vez mas ser el mejor DJ de L.A.! 5 estrellas para Pedro! 'Pa la cocina mi gente!!!

Bueno, esta vez he querido compartir algo que me encontre por ahi. Es una receta increiblemente deliciosa y no grazosa; que dejara a su pareja, familia o invitados pegao de la pared, como decimos 'po alla!

Puntas de filete

Ingredientes:
3 libras de filete de res
2 cebollas
2 ajíes en corte juliana
3 cucharadas de salsa inglesa
1 cucharadita de sal
2 1/2 cucharaditas aceite de oliva
1 cucharada de mantequilla
3 dientes de ajo

Preparación:
Corte el filete en tiras, las cebollas a la juliana y los ajíes también. En un sartén ponga aceite y mantequilla. Sazone el filete con sal y ajo triturado. Saltee la carne en el sartén ya caliente con el aceite y mantequilla, deje que doren ligeramente y agregue los ajíes. Luego revuelva y deje pasar 2 minutos y agregue la salsa inglesa y la cebolla. Saltee bajando el fuego a medio, y deje que la cebolla cueza sin ablandar demasiado. Sirva de inmediato.

Yo lo servi sobre arroz blanco (cocinado sin sal , ni aceite) acompañados de una rica ensalada verde con nuestro adorado aderezo Dominicano (aceite de oliva, vinagre y una pizaca de sal)

Espero lo disfruten al igual que nosotros en casa!

El Club Social Cultural y Recreativo Dominicano quiere hacerles participes y al mismo tiempo invitarle a usted y su distinguida familia; a ser parte de la Gran Parada, este Domingo 17; Conmemorando un año mas de la Independencia Centroamericana. Este año la organizacion Cofeca le ha extendido una invitacion al Club y a nuestra comunidad a ser participes de este evento.

Nuestra organizacion esta trabajando arduamente, para exsaltar nuestra cultura en este dia; les han permitido una carroza y un carro; en el cual iran señoritas, niñas, damas y claro que si; tambien acompañantes masculinos; y todos con un solo proposito; el dejarnos sentir como cultura en Los Angeles y poner en alto nuestra bella bandera!! El desfile de carrozas empieza a las 11:00 a.m. en la Pico Blvd. / Vermont y termina en el Mac Arthur Park on 6^th/Alvarado Ave. Venga a apoyarnos!! Traiga su bandera o cualquier cosa que le represente como Dominicano/a en esta gran fiesta de la Independencia Centromaricana.

En otra nota:

Para continuar festejando este mismo dia habra un gran desfile de grupos y cantantes en el Festival de la Calle 8, (8^th & Grand) incluyendo a Oro Solido, Nitro y Fanta, Trina, Marisela, La Sonora Dinamita y un sin numero de artistas que se estaran presentando en este magno evento hasta las 10:00 p.m. Tambien habra comida de diferentes paises; no deje de pasar por el puesto del Resaturant Don Lencho; un restaurant con orientacion familiar, que a mi criterio sirve las mejores pupusas (Salvadorean) en toda la urbe Angelina. No se te olvide!! A representar, y traete la bandera mas grande que encuentres y apoya!

Este fin de semana voy a tener un pequenito "photo-shoot" en L.A. para la nueva linea de camisas de mi website. Me lleno de orgullo a decir que todos los modelos son del "Club Dominicano!" Gracias a todos ustedes por ayudar a levantar esta marca de camisas que se ha vendido en Hawaii, Puerto Rico, NYC, Boston Y Florida para mencionar algunos. Esta marca significa nuestra vida porque todos somos Latinos viviendo en America, pero orgulloso de nuestra patria.

Mi gente..No es que soy bago!! Es que todavia no me llegaron las fotos del evento. Yo no tuve la oportunidad de tirar fotos. Pero se que tiraron! Por favor envia me lo a: david@herediadesigns.com. Los pasamos muy bien despues que se fueron el "SWAT" team! Dijieron que habia una bomba en el edificio, pero lo que sucedio fue que algien que perdio su juego, se fue de la mesa sin llevar se su bolsa. Gracias David e Ilonka por recibirnos(mi mama',mi esposa y yo)como si fueramos viejos amigos. Fue' una experiencia muy especial para nosotros y esperamos se pueda repetir en un futuro no muy dejano. Haremos un mayor esfuerzo para conocer mas miembros de la comunidad Dominicana la proxima vez. Creo que cuando saque' mi camara de su bulto, se me cayo' un PC(pocket computer) marca Hewlett Packard debajo de la mesa donde estabamos sentados; si alguien entrego' ese articulo a unos de los organizadores, mi nombre, direccion y telefono aparecen en la pantalla al activarlo. Espero alguien de buen caracter yo haya encontrado.

Dia De las Madres Celebracion

Que fiesta!!! Espero que todos lo pasaron bien con nosotros en Hollywood Park Casino. Mil gracias a el Club Dominicano, a DJ Pedro el Sabroso, y disculpa que se me olvido el nombre del grupo que viajaron desde Puerto Rico para estar con nosotros. Para mi, fue una celebracion bien amable con poemas, bailes y agradecimientos. Agradecimientos para miembros del club en especial Mayra Guerrero, que recibio una placa reconociendo todo lo que ella has hecho por el Club Dominicano.

Tambien le doy gracias por el apoyo de mis amigos que llegaron de Baldwin Park, San Diego y Las Vegas. Bueno, como yo baile tanto, solo tengo como 47 fotos. Pero por favor mandan me sus fotos para agregar lo en el blog. Tengo videos pero no salieron bien por la oscuridad. Si tienen videos, tambien le pido que me lo manden. Gracias a todos ustedes por el apoyo del Blog. El blog tiene visitantes de Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Nueva Yol, y Boston. Y todos estan sorprendio por lo tanto Dominicanos que hay en Los Angeles!! Last Wednesday our country was represented by our loved Juan Luis Guerra, here in Los Angeles at the “Colombia sin Minas Concert”, it was to benefit the kids in Colombia who need prostetics due to the fact that they lost their limbs after passing by land mines that were left by the guerrilla and military in Colombia. Juan Luis Guerra performed and he did his best only accompanied by a guitar and a piano to more than 6,ooo people at the Universal Amphitheatre, and this is what Univision said about his performance:

Y despues de tan exquisito banquete musical, no podïa faltar el postre, que tenia que ser a la altura. Fue asï que Juanes, Guerra, Sanz, Vives, Pausini, Fonsi y Montaner hicieron propio el clasico tema del dominicano, “ Ojala que llueva café” para cerrar la noche ante la euforia de los asistentes.

El Bodegon does it again! A birthday party of family and friends for "El Presidente" Braulio. What a great time it was. The music was phenominal as always when DJ Pedro El Sabroso is at the wheels of steel. I don't think I ever got off of the dance floor. I thought I met all of the Dominicans in L.A. but there were lots of new faces. Well new faces for me anyway. Here are a few photos of the night!

Everyone keeps asking the question, where do a lot of the Dominicans in Los Angeles meet? Well, the truth is they meet where ever there is a social event. At the park for baseball on Sundays, sometimes people hold dances in their houses, birthday parties, get togethers etc. But the truth is that the most famous meeting place is in "El Bodegon." A large warehouse redecorated (Dominican style) and tucked in between other warehouses and factories in Los Angeles. It's off of Alameda on the 10 freeway just past La Cienega. The board of directors are the ones who are responsible for throwing the Independencia Party that we all enjoyed. I was so impressed by the folkloric dance that I had to come speak to the ones in charge and find out what I had to do to get involved in that dance, next year. I was invited to a board of directors meeting last week. This was my chance to politic with the directors and find out what's up. When is the next event?

Although I was welcomed and treated like family, my face was met with anxious emotions. "who is this new comer asking us all these questions and trying to find out the low down on the directors meetings?" I was sure they were all thinking. I had to think quickly. I came up with an ingenious plan to get their weak spot, take pictures of all of them!! I yelled out "Photo time!" Which I was sure they would not turn down! They all leaped from their chairs and posed eagerly like little kids waiting for their chocolate ice cream on a hot summer day. It wasnt easy work. I posed with their kids, took pictures of all the members, and even had to be a good sport and let one of the directors beat me at pool! Well, it seemed my plan had worked.

I managed to get some juicy information. There is a Mothers Day celebration in the works. The details are still a little sketchy, but one is in the works. This one promises to be as big as if not bigger than the Independence day celebration. As for location? Well they discussed using El Bodegon, but that proposal was met with frowning faces. Talk of an outdoor celebration seemed to bring smiles to their cheeks. Well, I think they have at least one more event happening sooner than that, but it will require some more investigator work on my part. Trust me, as soon as I know about them, You'll know about them!!

Mannnnnnn...Let me tell you something. I Went to San Diego for the game on Saturday to see my Dominicans do it up in Petco Park, ready to fill up this blog with tons of pictures, stories and commentary about the game. I stayed up allllll night making this banner (which by the way my family in NY called to say that they saw me 4 times on univision, dancing and acting a fool!) I get to SD and not even five minutes at the ticket line, my batteries from my camera died! I got one picture. Could you believe this? Well, I turn to you mi gente. If any of you were at the game on Saturday, please send me some pictures as I would love to post them to the blog. What's a story without some photos!? I saw a lot of you Los Angeles Dominicans in San Diego so don't hold out on me!!! Also if you have pictures of el corito when we were all dancing in front of the concession stands send those as well!!

This is the sign I made. Some of you might have seen it being paraded around Petco Park either by me or some of my friends. This banner made it to Univision! I wonder if anyone taped it? Well, we didn't win but at least the banner brought a lot of smiles to peoples faces when they figured out what it said, or what it was attempting to say!

New Yorks Empire State Building to be lit with Dominican Colors in Celebration of Dominican Independence day!!!

The Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR) wishes everyone in our community a very happy Dominican Independence Day, which is celebrated every year on February 27.

This weekend, (February 24 through 26), the Empire State Building in New York City will be lit with the colors of the Dominican flag in celebration of Dominican Independence Day and Dominican Heritage Month. The lights of the Empire State Building can be seen from as far away as 80 miles. The lighting of the Dominican colors was made possible thanks to the support of the Empire State Building Co. LLC and the office of New York State Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat.

We encourage Dominicans and friends of our community to celebrate and participate in the many Dominican Independence Day events taking place throughout the United States and its territories. Ozzie Guillen Apologizes to A-Rod By RICK GANO, AP Sports Writer Feb. 17th TUCSON, Ariz. -- During his two seasons as manager of the Chicago White Sox, Ozzie Guillen has fired off opinions and profanity-filled declarations on a variety of topics and personalities.
On Friday, he added a rare offering to his repertoire -- an apology. In the SI article, which was centered mainly around Guillen's visit to a Venezuelan prison, the manager gave his opinion on several subjects, including Rodriguez's decision on which team to play for in the WBC. Rodriguez was born in the United States but his parents are Dominican. So he had a choice. He first thought he would play for the Dominican Republic, then he was not going to play at all before finally deciding to participate with Team USA."He knew he wasn't going to play for the Dominicans. He's not a Dominican. I hate hypocrites. He's full of (bleep)," Guillen said in the article. Guillen tried to explain his remarks Friday. "I don't call him a hypocrite in that way. Alex is not a hypocrite. I was just trying to say he doesn't have to please people. He doesn't have to make people from the United States or from the Dominican Republic or from Venezuela happy. When you do that, you sound like you are a hypocrite. You say, 'Hey I want to play for the United States and that's the team I belong on,' move on and that's it."

Guillen said he didn't want Rodriguez to have to deal with the issue at spring training when he reports and would call him, if necessary. "I apologize to Alex Rodriguez, his family, his fans, the New York Yankee organization, to the White Sox organization," Guillen said. "That's the first time I feel like I did something wrong. I've been in a lot of controversial things before, but I think I started this one and I'm going to finish it. ... What I did to Alex was wrong. He can do whatever he wants. If he wants to play for Japan, fine for him." Guillen also had a comment in the SI article about Nomar Garciaparra, who decided not to play for Mexico.

(Short Story) A taste of "un Desayuno Dominicano"

As the Alarm clock screamed for attention, I wiped the sleep from my eye and noticed it was already past lunchtime. The rumble from my stomach set off a 5.4 on the rictor scale throughout my body. I proceeded to the kitchen yearning for a nice, traditional Dominican Breakfast. "Ahhh, I miss being a teenager in NY." I thought. If I was at home in Mami's house at this time, the air would have smelled of Fried eggs, Mangu, Cebollas, Queso Frito, y salami.

I salivated at the thought of eating some Tostones con catchu, Hamon, Cebollas Y jugo de mango. I rushed to the kitchen cabinents but to my surprise, I had none of the above in the kitchen shelves or fridge. "Now what?" I thought. "Jump on a plane and go back to NY just for a plate of Mangu?" I joked. Suddenly the 100 watt lightbulb illuminated above my head as I realized that I now had Dominican paisanos living in Los Angeles!!

Without a moment to spare I ran back to my bedroom and fumbled through my phone books in a desperate search for any Dominicans I knew who lived in L.A.!! I stopped at Fulana's number and hit dial as I cleared my throat and prepared to engage in mindless conversation until I thought of a clever way to ask if I could come over for lunch! "Heredia!!" She shouted."Garcia!!" I responded."Y Que Vaina e'?" she asked. I got right to the point, "Tengo ganas de comer me un desayuno Dominicano y.." She quickly interrupted, "Heredia, arranca pa' mi casa que estoy cocinando." The force of the smile that emerged ripped the dry skin at the sides of my mouth."Ta' bien. Te veo en una hora!" I responded as I got ready for the long journey from Santa Clarita to Culver City, in the rain, in the middle of traffic, on a three day weekend, all for the sake of a Dominican Breakfast.

I jumped in my car and drove what seemed like hours in traffic. All the while I thought, I'm going to eat some great food and can't wait. An hour and a half later I arrived at Fulana's front door. The neighbors who watched me jet across the street, slip and almost get hit by a car must have thought I was a junkie as I peered through the gates in anxiety. Her house was quiet. There were no signs of Hamon sizzling on the stove. The air smelled of Gardenia flowers, not Tostones. The aftershock in my belly reminded me that I was a minute away from passing out. "Heredia, ven con migo que tengo que hacer un mandao' primero, y despues te cocino tu amuerzo." Damn it I thought. All this time I thought the food was ready. I almost got hit by a car crossing the street to sit at a dining table with empty plates. "Oh ta' bien. Claro que yo te acompanio, no hay problema." I responded.
We jumped into her car and I started swallowing my spit and searching for any remains of last nights dinner throughout the crevices of my teeth. "Primero tengo que Charlar con el dueno del donut shop porque estoy tratando de vender le unos pasteles." she said. "Y despues tenemos que ir downtown porque me tengo que comprar unas cortinas, una mesa, Pampers, papel de toilet..blah, blah, blah, bling, bling, bling blah." she went on to explain. Although I had never been to downtown L.A. in the 3.5 years that I've been in Los Angeles, I couldn't shake the hunger and just stopped talking all together. I had become numb. My stomach wasn't convinced that I had plans on feeding him any time soon and started spitting up the acidic food from last nights dinner just so that he could remind himself of what it was like to have food flowing through him. He finally began nibbling away at the lining in my stomach walls.

15 minutes later we had arrived at the Fabric district in downtown Los Angeles, at this point I was dilirious. I was so hungry, that the people walking around me started to look like hamburgers and frenchfries. With all the walking we did, I felt like we were back in NY. As we walked, we bumped our way through some of the residents of Skid row, my nose was fighting off an attack of the cigarette smell in the air, while my ears were repelling the invasion of noise the permeated around me. All in all it was an eventful first time in the fabric district I must admit. I witnessed a horrible car accident, took some pictures, bought a jacket and flirted with some asian women. "Ok Heredia. Ya no' vamo." She said. I almost hit the roof in excitement. The long wait will finally be over. My stomach who had given up on me suddenly stopped spitting up acidic foods. Fulana and I got into her car and drove back to her house.

As she began frying up the oil in the pan my eyes filled with tears. The moment of truth had arrrived. I was finally going to have my taste of "un Desayuno Dominicano." Who cared if it was at 4:23pm! The Tostones were done and she took out the Victorina Catchup. The air began to smell like that Dominican morning in Mami's house. Suddenly I felt 15 again. I was nibbling away at the tostones, jumping around in Fulana's kitchen in anticipation as she bagan frying the hamon y cebollas. I was so giddy that I took out my camera and started taking pictures of the food I was about to eat. Finally we sat at the table. She said that before we eat she had a gift for me.

A ticket to the Dominican Social Clubs Dominican Independence day celebration. She promised it to be an incredible evening full of serious music, food and crowds of Dominican families. I was in heaven. Suddenly I heard angels in the heavens singing bachata in my head. This couldn't be possible. An entire dominican community in Los Angeles? I was lost in my thoughts until her plate of food snapped me back into the present time. "Buen aprovecho" she said. "Gracias." I responded. She smiled at me. I smiled back. We stared smiling at each other in silence. I thought to myself, "I wonder what I would have to go through to get her to make dinner for me?

House Party!!

Hola Amigos, my name is David Reyes Heredia. let me take you back to the genesis of Dominicans in L.A. It all started with a posting I made in www.DR1.com in June 2005. I asked the question, "Are there any Dominicans living in L.A.?" To my surprise, it sparked a frenzy of posts, remarks, phone number exchanges, etc. Many people have contacted me and I have met some wonderful people since then.

One of the lovely individuals I met was Ilonka Garcia. She and I have really hit it off and got the great idea of getting some of the individuals from DR1 together and meet in person. Also, to sell tickets for the upcoming Dominican Republic Independence day (Feb. 27th) celebration on the 25th of February. What a pleasure it was meeting those of you who were able to make it out yesterday Feb.11th. It was a great time, ILonka our gracious host, opened up her house and her kitchen to meet and greet you all and it was an absolute blast.

What started out as a simple quiet get together, turned into a pumpin' Dominican party! It started at 11am and it was non-stop dancing till 9:00pm! As some of us trickled out, new faces trickled in. It was a sight you had to see to believe! Only a few photos were taken of the early group of people who arrived. Then once the Brugal, Hennessy and Mama Juana came out, the camera got the rest of the night off.
